Where is Nauru?

Nauru is an island republic in the Pacific Ocean, 42 kilometres south of the equator and 4000 kilometres north-east of Sydney. 

A raised, fossilised coral atoll, Nauru is one of three great phosphate rock islands in the Pacific Oceanthe other two being Banaba (Ocean Island) in Kiribati and Makatea in French Polynesia.

Nauru has a total land area of 21 square kilometres and a population of approximately 13,000 people. 

Most Indigenous Nauruans are predominantly of Micronesian origin. Non-Indigenous inhabitants of the island are mostly other Pacific islanders, Chinese, Australian and Filipino expatriates, as well as other temporary residents (primarily asylum seekers and refugees).

Why recruit workers from Nauru?

Nauru joined the Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS) on 1 July 2018. The Labour Sending Unit under the Chief Secretary Department in Nauru coordinates the screening, recruitment and pre-departure training of workers for both the Seasonal Worker Programme and the PLS. 

Nauru has significant previous experience in labour mobility programs in both Australia and  New Zealand. 

Agriculture (including heavy machinery operation)

Many Nauruans are qualified and experienced heavy equipment operators who are accustomed to operating various types of excavators for mining on the island.

Nauruan workers are often experienced in operating dump trucks, front-end loaders, bulldozers, forklifts, and side loaders for containers servicing the Nauruan Government and its entities, as well as the private sector. 

Housekeeping and hospitality

Nauruan workers are typically skilled in all areas of housekeeping and many have experience working for international contractors.

Workers from Nauru are often experienced kitchen stewards and are accustomed to assisting with the preparation of breakfast, lunch and dinner for hundreds of people each day.

Nauruans are also experienced in maintenance of public areas in hotels, including swimming pools and bars.

Horticulture and viticulture

Through Pacific labour mobility programs, Nauruans have worked in Australia and New Zealand and are experienced in both unskilled and low-skilled to semi-skilled work pruning and picking fruit, vegetables and grapes. 

Security

Nauruans often have experience and certification in providing security services for organisations such as Wilson Security.

Nauruans are also experienced in working as guards and many have worked with contractors such as Canstruct, Transfield, HMS and CTS. 

Welding and fabrication

Many Nauruans are skilled in hands-on welding and fabrication work, and can also train and supervise others working in this area.

Workers can cut, modify and repair aluminium, steel and other metals on excavator buckets, wagons, boats, fuel tank pipes and dump tricks.

Nauruan workers are often experienced in using sub arc, MIG and TIG plasma cutters, stick welding, and gas cutting and welding.

They can read drawings, charts, signs and symbols and have good written and verbal communication skills.

To recruit workers under the Seasonal Worker Programme (SWP) or the Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS), an Australian employer must be registered as an Approved Employer, or they must recruit workers through a labour-hire firm that is an Approved Employer.

The Australian Government has two visa schemes available for Nauru nationals to work in Australia.  

The Seasonal Worker Programme (SWP) provides access to unskilled work opportunities for up to nine months in the Australian agricultural and accommodation sectors (in selected locations).

The Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS) enables citizens of Nauru to take up low-skilled and semi-skilled work in rural and regional Australia for one to three years.

 To join the Seasonal Worker Programme (SWP) or the Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS), an applicant must: 

  • be a Nauruan citizen 
  • have police clearance 
  • have a medical clearance 
  • be 21 years and over for the SWP 
  • be 21 years and over, but not not over 45 years for the PLS 
  • be able to obtain a valid passport 
  • be physically fit and healthy 
  • be of good character 
  • be able to understand English 
  • have a genuine reason to enter Australia for work and return to Nauru after the contract ends
  • be committed to undertaking self-employable opportunities using the skills, knowledge and savings that have been acquired in Australia. 

Applicants who meet the above criteria are invited to register their interest in joining the work-ready pool at the Labour Mobility Unit at the Department of the Chief Secretary.
